Magic is ancient, older than reckoning. What is it, this power that traces its way through the tendrils of time? Humans have always been in league with the magics of the hidden dimensions including the plant realms. While there are still magic workers to be sure and magic that has found a home in religion and other spiritual traditions, I feel it is fair to say that magic is due a more elevated place in a society that tends to favor the rational and secular.

To do this, we have to recover our sense of wonderment and awe. The denizens of the other worlds respond to our ability to be enchanted, to be moved by the strange, and motivated by unseen forces. Perhaps magic is consciousness or maybe it is life itself; an awareness of being and becoming within the knots of space and time.

Let’s explore the magic housed within the plant kingdoms.

What is Plant Magic?

As studies have shown, something animists, witches ,and plant people have long known, is that plants are sentient. They are older than we are and they carry an ancient power within their seeds.

Plants are their own beings, unique entities with living spirits that relate and respond to their environments. They grow, live, and die, passing into and out of this material realm within the spirals of existence. They have their own life trajectories and purposes in the grand cosmic design of life, death, and renewal.

One role that plants might occupy is that of keepers of magic. Study herbalism long enough and one cannot help but recognize the mystical space that plants inhabit. Like stones, animals, or the weather, they are touching the ineffable powers of creation. We can build relationships with the spirits of plants to better commune with the special magic they carry.

Magic in the Land

A plant’s magic is grounded with the earth. Growing from the soil, their roots touch the palaces of the ancestors and networks of mushroom mycelium. This underworld activity ensures everything gets used, composted, and recycled in its turn…

But what else might be lurking beneath the rock that plants play a part in bringing to the surface? One idea, might be the energy of the spirits within the land, prehistoric and massive entities that have receded within the cavernous depths of the mountain and below the crust of the Earth.

We should ask ourselves, what are these currents of magic plants are in touch with? What are they in service to? While I don’t have an absolute answer, it does seem to be related to the deep and old magic of this planet. I’d love to know what you think, leave your thoughts below!

Hearts Entwined

Something I ask for from the Divine is for my spirit to be enmeshed with the spirits of plants. To let their magic seep into my bones, into my knowing so I can be woven into the primordial magic they carry.

Let’s regard our plant kin and ask for a drink of the land magic they have been working with for the ages. We have much to learn from them, especially the magical practitioner who wants to descend into the sacred magic of the Earth itself.
